Franciscan Sister Hannah Johnecheck shares about a spring service project with her second grade class at St. Francis of Assisi School, Yuma, Arizona.
Each class at Saint Francis of Assisi School, Yuma, Arizona, tries to do a specific service project each year that is focused on someone beyond their comfort zone. This year the second grade decided to do a service project related to First Communion since this was a special year that they would receive their First Communion. Each student brought $3 to school. They walked to a nearby religious articles store named Santa Cruz. They each purchased a First Communion gift for a First Communion student at Saint Peter’s Indian Mission. After returning to school, the students made a card and wrapped the gifts.
For delivery, a few students and parents represented the class and spent a day traveling to and visiting Saint Peter’s Mission.
During the visit, the families and children shared the gifts.
Then, they were treated to a tour, enjoyed recess with the children and ended with attending Saint Peter’s end of the day prayer It was a beautiful and blessed day!
