Franciscan Sister Hannah Johnecheck shares desert wisdom from reflection on the birth of tortoises at St. Peter Mission, Bapchule, Arizona.

Today we had some Desert Tortoises hatch at Saint Peter Mission. Wow, what excitement and awe filled our heart at these amazing creatures! There are very few, if any, other of God’s creatures that could claim to be more resilient, live longer, or be closer to the earth. Tortoises give us a small picture of our Great God. They seem to “live forever”. They live in a harsh environment. They can survive on little.

Similarly, Christ lives forever! Christ entered into the harshness of the cross. He was grounded in His Father alone. He then rose from the dead. O Lord, thank you for reminding us of how possible it is to be grounded in You Alone. You Alone enable us to survive in harsh situations and times. You Alone teach us to be grounded in you. You Alone raise us to eternal life. Praise be our strong, humble, resilient Jesus Christ who lives forever!
