In honor of the migrants, the deported, and the disappeared, a Tucson Interfaith group walked Stations of the Cross in downtown Tucson on Good Friday. Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, Sister Marlita Henseler and Sister Carla Riach, joined the walk. It started at the historic Pima County courthouse, stopped at a health clinic, the police station, St. Augustine’s Cathedral, and a mortuary. Simple songs were sung during the walks. A cross draped with the clothes of a migrant found in the desert led the procession.
Two stations of the Cross were recalled at each stop with reflections offered by various people including Sister Marlita Henseler and Martin DeSoto from San Xavier del Bac Mission. One stop included a memorial made by Guatemalan immigrants. Time was spent looking at posters with photos and the stories of Guatemalan children who died crossing the desert.
It was very prayerful and meaningful for the sisters and other attendees. Sister Marlita met several people she worked with at the Kino Border Initiative and Casa Alitas.
