Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Mary Teresa Bettag shares on a Colorado experience with some of the Yuma Catholic High School Cross Country Team Camp.

It had been a dream of mine to host our cross-country (XC) camp there. So far, we’ve done the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, and Bisbee – but we’d not ventured beyond Arizona. My present group of athletes was very motivated to branch out and put in the work to fundraise and make it happen. We were able to spent the week of July 19-26 in Estes Park, CO, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park hiking, rock climbing, swimming, camping, and having an unreasonably good time. My XC team has been known as “the team that has the most fun” and we lived up to that moniker this week. We stayed at the Catholic Camp of the Archdiocese of Denver, Annunciation Heights at the foot of the iconic 14,259 ft Longs Peak, giving us some good altitude training. It also happens to be across from the most photographed church in the United States, the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel at Camp St. Malo, visited by John Paul II when he came to Denver in August of 1993 for World Youth Day. We not only grew our lung capacities and team bonds, we also grew our faith in the midst of the beauty of God’s creation. It gave new meaning to Psalm 121, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!”
